Chocolate beer spread has been created.

The unusual filling, called Birra Spalmabile, has gone on sale in department store Selfridges, which describes the paste as a "sweet and beer-perfumed jelly with an intense scent and a full-bodied taste".

The spread was created by two Italian companies - brewery Alta Quota and chocolate maker Napoleone.

Alta Quota spokesman Claudio Lorenzini is quoted by Italy Magazine as saying: "This is not the first time in Italy and in Europe that someone has tried to make a non-liquid beer, but the experiments carried out have not been successful because the combination of ingredients was not a winner.

"We believe that we have found the right formula with the use of high-quality products."
