A Melville bar owner has been arrested for allegedly killing a rugby player and is due to appear in the Newlands Magistrate's Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

"He was arrested on Sunday," Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

Thulani Popoyi, 28, was found dead outside the pub on Sunday morning.

"It is suspected that he was involved in a fight or had been fatally assaulted," said Dlamini.

"His body had multiple injuries which might have been inflicted with a sharp object."

Dlamini said suspected accomplices could be arrested soon.
