A police officer in Vaal was arrested for murder after he shot and killed a security guard at a shebeen, reported Sapa.

The 30-year-old constable, attached to the Maitland flying squad, allegedly shot and killed the man with his official firearm in the early hours of Sunday, Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini told Sapa

An altercation occurred at 2am at Zizi’s tavern when the security guard employed at the tavern told the constable that the tavern was closed.

"The constable alleges that the deceased pulled a knife and threatened to stab him. He then fired shots with his official firearm, hitting the security guard in the shoulder," Dlamini said.

The security guard died on the scene.

The statement made by the constable didn’t corroborate with those of witnesses and he was arrested.

The constable will appear at Bluedowns Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
