A 34-year-old man was caught driving at 221km per hour on the M1 highway in Midrand, Johannesburg metro police said on Sunday.

"The man, aged 34 and from Pretoria was arrested at 2am on Sunday while travelling with his brother," said spokesman Chief Supt Wayne Minnaar.

"When asked why he was speeding, he told officers he was showing his brother how fast the Mercedes Benz could go."

A total of 31 drivers were arrested for speeding in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, 308 motorists were arrested for alleged drunk driving over the weekend.

Minnaar said the motorists were arrested in areas such as the Johannesburg CBD, Midrand, Newlands, Eldorado Park, Meadowlands, Cosmo City and on the N12 along the Golden Highway offramp.

"Our aim is to arrest 500 drunk drivers every weekend, as motorists continue to ignore traffic regulations by driving drunk every weekend," Minnaar said.

The drivers are expected to appear in various courts soon.
