Recently, a 38-year-old man was intercepted by the SAPS’s Trans-International Investigation Team at the OR Tambo International Airport after failing to account for the origin of large sums of foreign currency he was carrying.

The cops seized over R161 000 worth of foreign currency from the man, who was travelling from Brazil and set to board a plane to Cape Town. The money was allegedly hidden in the socks he was wearing.

The suspect had not declared the money at customs and failed to account for its origin.

Police say his only explanation was that he was self-employed, but he could not tell them what field of self-employment he was involved in. They then confiscated the money and handed it to the customs officials.
