Dad gets his kids back

IT'S a bright, sunny day and the sound of laughter fills the yard as a tall man runs after two toddlers trying to kick a soccer ball. Knowledge Dlamini*, the father of Bongi* (3) and Nana* (2), is all smiles as he gathers up his little angels and puts them on his shoulders.

Knowledge (31), a chef at a Centurion hotel, captured Mzansi's hearts with his passionate fight to win back his daughters after they were taken away by the department of social development. His in-laws had the girls removed from his care because he had not yet paid the family the R20 000 lobola they had requested for their daughter's hand in marriage. Their daughter died in January, before negotiations were finalised.

Just days after her funeral the girls were taken from their dad. Now after almost two months away, the tots are back home with him and are lighting up the place with their laughter. Seated in his blue four-room, corrugated-iron house in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, Knowledge settles down to talk about his emotional roller coaster. The two girls climb all over him and he's unconcerned as they dirty his smart golf shirt, but he does ask us not to photograph their faces.
