Following the axing of Gareth Cliff as an Idols South Africa judge, M-net says it has decided not to replace him and to keep the number of panelists at three.

This means that Unathi Msengana, Randall Abrahams and Somizi Mhlongo will be the only judges for the reality show's 12th season.

And fresh developments intensifying the already dramatic saga is that top lawyer Dali Mpofu has undertaken to defend the controversial radio presenter in court.

Cliff was taken off the show following “racially distasteful “comments he made on social networks recently. As outrage rose over racist comments by Durbanite Penny Sparrow, Cliff tweeted that “People really don’t understand free speech at all”, a comment which many read as supporting Sparrow’s viewpoints.

The reality singing competition will now only be broadcast on Mzansi Magic. The channel’s Head of Marketing, Nondumiso Macebe, said, "We will not replace Gareth at this stage. The show will have only three judges, which are the remaining judges," she said.

Meanwhile, Cliff is reported to be suing the channel for a whooping R25 million for defamation of character and unfair dismissal, among other things. Following the announcement that  Mpofu will represent fired Idols judge Gareth Cliff,  he has received a backlash from "black Twitter".  Twelebs have weighed in on the ongoing saga, with some calling the renowned  lawyer a sellout, especially as an EFF chairperson.
