Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was advised by doctors and family to cut short a trip to Scandinavian countries to recover from exhaustion.

Turning 83 next month, the Archbishop has been to Bali, Honolulu and Lusaka in the past month.

A cancer survivor, he has been working actively on global human rights campaigns, having recently spoken on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the rights of the Aborigines in Australia and a call against fossil fuels.

His daughter, Reverend Mpho Tutu, is the executive director of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation and commented on her father’s health from Sweden, saying he would be returning to his Cape Town home this weekend.

The Arch, as he’s affectionately known, will be celebrating his 83rd birthday on October 7 at the University of the Western Cape.

The guest speaker is former Irish president, Mary Robinson.
