Doctors raking it in

Doctors have always had a reputation for being wealthy – and a good catch.

While that might not be true for every doctor, it’s more than true for these five men.

Patrick Soon-Shiong

Patrick Soon-Shiong (62) is South African-born American surgeon, medical researcher and businessman. Originally from Port Elizabeth, he finished high school at 16 and became a doctor at 23. He also studied at the University of the Witwatersrand. After making a name for himself as a surgeon, who attempted pancreas cell transplants to treat diabetes in the 1980s, he founded two pharmaceutical companies, Abraxis Bioscience and American Pharmaceutical Partners, which he sold for a combined R106 billion. He invented the cancer drug Abraxane, which, after years of slow sales, is now a blockbuster thanks to its efficacy against pancreatic cancer. He’s a member of the Warren Buffett and Bill Gates Giving Pledge; he plans to give away at least half his $12,5 billion fortune.

James Andrews

James Andrews (72) is currently working at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, America, as an orthopedic surgeon. Dr Andrews is an American physician with an estimated net worth of $100 million, as of 2014. He’s known as the “alpha doc” – a surgeon for knee, elbow and shoulder injuries, and is a specialist in repairing damaged ligaments.

Dr Paul Nassif

Dr Paul Nassif (51) is a rhinoplasty specialist and cosmetic surgeon who has an estimated net worth of $14 million. Others will know the Beverly Hills plastic surgeon for his former marriage to Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Adrienne Maloof.  The latest is that Dr Nassif has moved on with a new girlfriend Chantell de Jong.

Dr Phillip Frost

Billionaire Dr Phillip Frost (89) made his fortune treating diseases, but now he’s an investor in an e-cigarette company. Dr Frost serves as the Chairman of the Board for Miami-based Ladenburg Thalmann Financial Services and is an investor in multiple smaller operations, such as Pershing Gold. In 2010, Forbes ranked Dr Frost number 437 on the list of the world's richest people, with a net worth of approximately $2,2 billion.

Phillip Calvin "Phil" McGraw (64), better known as Dr Phil, is an American television personality, author, former psychologist and the host of a self-titled talk show. Dr Phil first gained celebrity status with appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the late 1990s. He’s estimated to be worth $240 million.
