An eThekwini Metro Police officer found himself on the other side of the law when he was detained during a Hawks drug operation in Wentworth on Thursday.

The officer, who cannot be named until he appears in court on charges of drug possession, is understood to have been stationed on the beachfront.

Sources within the Metro Police described the officer as a new recruit and a "bad apple".

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that the officer was arrested during an operation run by the Metro Police and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

"A joint operation yielded a positive result with the arrest of a 29-year-old man for possession of drugs.

"Yesterday at about 16:00 members proceeded to the suspect’s flat in Wentworth and found him busy packing cocaine in small plastic bags and was arrested. The estimated street value of the recovered drugs is R35 000," Zwane said.

Police officers descended on the flat in large numbers before forcing their way inside.

A source with Metro Police structures, who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, said that the policeman had been caught at the home, which belongs to his cousin.

"He was found in one of the bedrooms while he was still busy cutting the cocaine," the source added.
