Comedy. 2009. 80 min. with Steven Kaplan, William Hmacy, Cheryl Hines and Alia Shawkat. Director: Brian Hecker. 13ls.

Months before prom night nerdy teen Danny (Kaplan) is already in a state over who to ask – especially when he hears the school’s biggest dweeb, Bart, not only has a date but has booked a hotel room.

Danny’s life-long pal Camille (Shawkat) asks him but he decides to hold out for a cheerleader. Meanwhile his recently-divorced parents, Ernie (Macy) and Beth (Hines), are trying to restart their lovelives – Beth with some success but sleazeball Ernie less so. Suddenly it’s just hours before the prom and Danny still doesn’t have a date...

It’s a story as old as the Hollywood hills yet this flick entertains all the way. The script is original and Kaplan’s teen angst convinces, but it’s worth watching just for the hilarious Macy and his bizarre hairdo. And it’s thankfully free of the toilet humour and vulgarity so beloved of teen comedies, making it a fun family watch. Enjoy!
