Comedy-drama. 2010. 105 min. With Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. Director: Lisa Cholodenko. 16LNS.

To appreciate this hugely enjoyable film, forget any preconceived ideas you may have of what a family is supposed to look like and how it should function.

Nic (Bening) and Jamie (Moore) are a lesbian couple who’ve each had a child, a son and a daughter, using sperm stock from the same donor, Paul (Ruffalo). The kids are now teens and curious about their biological father. They find him and, behind their mothers’ backs, arrange to meet him – and in the process kick off a series of events that makes for extremely entertaining viewing.

The Kids Are All Right is filled with hysterically funny but also true-to-life, sad moments that’ll leave you questioning your own outlook on life. It has been nominated for four Oscars, including Best Film and Best Actress (for Bening).
