Eat for a younger you

Do you want to stay younger for longer so you can keep up with your kids? We tell you what to eat, and what to avoid, to slow down time.

What to eat:

  • Dermatologist Dr Nicholas Perricone believes a youth-inducing diet must have lots of water, fruits and vegetables, as well as foods rich in protein and healthy fats. Dark green, leafy vegetables are rich in carotenoids, which have important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that reduce the risk of heart disease, block sunlight-induced inflammation in the skin and protect your eyes.
  • Other items you should include in your diet are wild salmon, oats and green tea. They’re not only heart healthy and nourishing, but have powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can help protect your body, brain and skin from the effects of ageing.
  • Eating for your youth doesn’t mean you have to skip the treats. Red wine, especially cabernet sauvignon, contains an amazing little antioxidant, resveratrol, which promotes heart health, cuts your risks of cancer and has anti-ageing properties, but only if you drink it in moderation.
  • Dark chocolate ? the good stuff that contains 70 per cent cocoa solids or more ? is high in anti-ageing anti-oxidants such as potent flavan-3-ols. “In fact, cocoa contains double the flavan-3-ols antioxidant content of red wine and five times that of green tea,” says Perricone.

What to avoid:

The four main enemies in your nutritional war against ageing are:

  • Sugary foods
  • Simple carbohydrates, such as white flour and rice
  • Trans fats and
  • Alcohol
