A man was arrested in Grahamstown after he allegedly stabbed his father to death, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Captain Mali Govender said the 44-year-old was arrested on Wednesday night.

"According to an eyewitness... there was an argument between father and son. The deceased had refused to hand over his pension money to the suspect. The suspect then [allegedly] stabbed his ageing father in the upper body and fled the scene."

The man will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court soon.
