The warmer months have finally arrived and nothing beats spending time on your patio and unwinding with family and friends. Enjoy alfresco dining and a traditional South African braai on your dream patio this summer.

Take your outdoor living area to the next level and transform it into a trendy, welcoming extension of your home with these inspiring decor tips. Retail and Display Coordinator at Tile Africa, Liza Watermeyer shares her tips to get you started:

  • Bring the indoors outdoors: For cohesiveness and to ensure that your outdoor area complements your indoor area, apply the same design and decor principles as you would inside your home to achieve balance from one room to the next. One way to achieve a uniformed look in your home is by colour matching. Duplicate the interior colour scheme by introducing it to the patio with matching decor accessories. For example, if the colour scheme in the lounge has hints of blue, repeat that same palette in your outdoor entertainment area with blue scatter cushions, loose rugs or lanterns.
  • Opt for durable and low maintenance surfaces: When it comes to outdoor flooring, cladding and work surfaces durability and maintenance are important considerations. Tiles are a smart option for outdoor rooms as they are easy to clean and long lasting. Ceramic and porcelain tiles with beautiful inkjet prints that imitate wood and natural stone are now manufactured locally. They’re easy on the budget and create a beautiful natural look without the hassles of sealing and sanding. Those with a slight texture offer a slip resistant finish and are perfect for areas that get wet.
  • Add some texture: Create a textured feature wall next to your braai area or against one particular wall with slate, travertine or sandstone cladding. Natural stone tiles are perfect for outdoor areas as they’re extremely durable and can withstand harsh weather conditions. They create a rustic look and suit an outdoor retreat inspired by nature. A cost-effective alternative is inkjet tiles that imitate slate.
  • Build a fire pit: A fire pit creates a social hub where family and friends can gather. They’re the perfect spot for socialising late into the evening, are great for toasting marshmallows and at keeping visitors warm in winter. Plan your fire pit to have comfortable built-in seating and enough leg room. Tiles will clad a fire pit and its seating beautifully, especially stone-look tiles.
