I want to start a business and employ people – which labour laws should I know?

With an understanding of the basic concepts and principles underpinning the labour laws, you’ll save yourself many of the headaches associated with employing staff.

These are three key pieces of legislation that I think you should familiarize yourself with:

  1. The Basic Conditions of Employment Act
  2. The Labour Relations Act
  3. The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)

Depending on the business that you plan to start, you may want to source the help of a legal expert with practical experience in the industry, as there may be specific legislative requirements that govern your chosen field above and beyond the three laws mentioned above.

TOP TIP: If you have the time, read relevant books and articles on some of the labour law cases and get to know the rules of the game and how the system implements them. Good luck!
