Face to face with firebrand Zanele Magwaza-Msibi

THERE are tea and biscuits on the table, but the atmosphere is far from warm and homely. Six bodyguards hover around us – four in the lobby of the Joburg hotel where we meet, and another two at the exit to the pool area. It’s clear that Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) chairwoman Zanele Magwaza-Msibi is living in troubled times.

Her year began with a bang. First she heard there was a contract out on her life, then attempts were made on the lives of some of her supporters – including a councillor in KwaZulu- Natal. Next she was removed from her duties in the province by her own party and finally, on 18 January, she lost her attempt in court to force the IFP to hold a leadership election.
