Financial woes for Big fish?

WITH an illustrious career spanning almost three decades he’s doubtless one of the highest-paid gospel singers. Sipho 'Big Fish'Makhabane is known for producing platinum-selling albums and has won most of the major awards.

But lately he’s been the subject of spiteful rumours saying he can hardly get by financially.

“He’s really fallen on hard times,” our source says. “Part of the reason is he’s lost his long-time cash cow, songbird Hlengiwe Mhlaba, to EMI.” He sold Hlengiwe’s entire catalogue for a whopping R2 million.

This means he has virtually no claim over her.“The problem is he bought most of his cars on ‘residual’ and banks have repossessed a few of his eight German sedans,” a source says. EMI confirmed that Hlengiwe is indeed one of their artists.   “I have no idea what they’re talking about,” Sipho chuckles.  “I still have all my cars. The only thing is I sold my BMW 7 series and bought an E500 Merc instead.

That was last year. Otherwise I still have all my cars. They only wish!

“Hlengiwe and I are no longer together. It’s no secret. This is old news. I discovered her and was happy to let her spread her wings

in the industry. I’m happy about what I’ve done with her.

“The rumours are not new. Ten years ago similar rumours surfaced about my supposed financial woes. God’s plan is not man’s plan. There are people who are not necessarily chuffed about my success. This is all too familiar.”
