Lesego Matsepe's former colleagues from the soapie Isidingo, Meshack Mavuso and Hlubi Mboya, pay tribute to the actress.

Lesego Motsepe, touched the hearts of most South African’s coming into our homes on a nightly basis when she portrayed the charming Lettie Matabane on, the SABC 3 soapie, Isidingo.

Lesego (39) was found dead in her Randburg home, by her brother who went to check up on her. The talented actress and singer who starred in the soapie from 1998 to 2008  bravely declared her HIV + status on World Aids Day in 2011 and admitted at the time she’d been living with the virus for almost 13 years. Her last big piece of her work was her amazing portray of Brenda Fassie in the play Ma Brrr in 2010 for which she won rave reviews. Now some of Lesego’s former co-stars and good friends pay tribute to her.

Meshack Mavuso, one of Lesego’s love interests on Isidingo, was saddened by Lesego’s passing. He says, “Finding out about it was very difficult for me, the whole country has lost a hero. She was a great actress, one of those people who always knew what they wanted and went for it. We used to spend the whole day together at one point so she was my work wife and she took great care of me. We were like brother and sister!” According to Meshack Lesego was very professional and also stubborn.

He says, “She was extremely stubborn and a fighter, that’s why she survived with the disease. God is very rich in heaven with our talent, he took Brenda, Lebo, Tata Madiba and now Lesego.” He adds very passionately, “It’s such a shame that she hadn’t been working, Lesego was so very talented! But sadly it’s about saving money, film makers would rather get some one of the street than get a proper actress. Now there are more celebrities than actors but Lesego was great – it’s such a pity that she didn’t do more work and get the respect she deserved.

Hlubi Mboya remembers Lesego with great fondness and was in tears over her friend’s death. She says, “Lesego was a complete sweetheart and she was more than a colleague – she was a good friend for over a decade. She was a great actress and she loved her role in Isidingo. She played my sister-in-law on set so we had lots of special moments together from the funny ones to the bickering ones, it was all lovely!”

She adds after a pause, “Lesego had a very generous heart as well. We did a lot of charity work together on the weekends from spending time with the kids to uplifting communities. Hearing about her death was a very bad day for me and I’m very hurt and saddened by it. I send my condolences to her brother and her mother. Lesego will forever remain a beautiful songbird and may her soul rest in peace.”
