Free State Stars striker dies

Richard Henyekane of Free Stars passed away in an accident in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Bloemfontein-based soccer club Free State Stars has lost its striker Richard Henyekane in a car accident in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A statement released on the club's website reveals that the Bafana Bafana player was the only fatality in the accident.

"Henyekane was travelling with four other passengers when they were involved in a tragic motor vehicle accident. He was, unfortunately the only one to lose his life in this incident," the statement reports.

The club has also conveyed its sadness about the untimely death of the 31-year-old and has sent condolences to the star's family and fans.

"We wish to say to the Henyekane family that they must know that we are with them at all times, and trust that they will put all their sorrows in the hands of God the Almighty in this hard period."

"To the Stars family of fans, sponsors, supporters and others we believe that this is a period in which you will remain steadfast in praying for Henyekane’s teammates as they come to terms with this sad moment," the statement contined.

City Press reports that the accident took place in Bethlehem in the Free State Province.

Henyekane's passing comes just four months after the death of his brother, Joseph, who was a defender for Golden Arrows.

Henyekane had earned nine caps with national football side Bafana Bafana since he began representing the country when he was 26 years old.
