FS Stars’ Kennedy Mweene

HIS teammates shout encouragement from the clubhouse as he limps towards his sleek red Volkswagen Scirocco. He smiles and waves goodbye to them as he juggles calls on his two cellphones. It's clear that Free State Stars captain and goalie, Kennedy Mweene, is a popular guy – not to mention admired in soccer circles as Ever Present, a moniker he's earned for his record of playing every minute of every game for his club this season.

But while pulling off a typically acrobatic save against Ajax Cape Town a month ago, he landed awkwardly and sprained his ankle. That hasn't stopped the tough 26-year-old Zambian from playing for his country, though, and he kept a clean sheet in their 2-0 win against Mozambique in a recent Afcon qualifier.Kennedy gingerly eases himself into his sporty ride as he signals us to follow him to his elegant two-bedroom townhouse just around the corner in Bethlehem's CBD. He confesses he'd rather have spent the day at home resting his ankle with his wife of five years, Sharon, and two kids, Bradley (6) and Angel, (2). But a captain has to set an example and he's not one to ignore the call of duty.

He parks next to a brand new black Golf 6 GTI – his other set of wheels – and limps towards the front door, where he gets a hero's welcome. Angel jumps up and down until dad picks her up and walks into the lounge where he puts his foot up on the comfy brown leather couch.
