Full Circle 3/5

They’d been married for 35 years – almost to the day – when it happened.

It was July, bitterly cold, and she’d been doing extra shifts at the library as she had a surprise planned for her husband.

Everything about that day was still so clear in her mind. She’d left the library at 7 pm with the latest Jeffrey Archer novel tucked into her bag because Zebulon loved his novels.

She drove home in the dark. Mildred was looking forward to putting her feet up and enjoying a nice cup of tea. If Zebulon was home maybe he’d started preparing dinner. They were having fried chicken with chips and vegetables. They always had that on a Wednesday night.

She’d smiled to herself, thinking they’d been in a bit of a rut lately. She had been saving all her extra money for a week away in Durban. That was going to be her surprise for her husband.

Like all married couples, they’d had their ups and downs over the years but they were mostly okay. Zebulon had worked hard at his job as a teacher and she had always assisted at the local library.

Their biggest dream was to see their two children educated. Goodwin, who had just qualified as a doctor, was now doing his internship and Nelisiwe was a journalist working for the local paper. It was her daughter who had given her the idea to keep a journal.
