Bafana player Siyabonga Sangweni is fast becoming a player to be reckoned with

FOUR minutes are left in a game that will decide whether Bafana Bafana crash out of the Africa Cup of Nations or advance to the quarterfinals. Trailing Morocco 2-1 they need nothing less than a draw to qualify – they know their fate is in their hands.

Defender Siyabonga Sangweni surges up field and curls the ball with the grace and poise of a striker into the back of the Moroccan net. Goal!

Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium erupts into a frenzy as an elated Siyabonga runs, screaming with joy to the touchline where he’s met by his ecstatic teammates. South Africa are through to the quarterfinals!

With that goal, Siyabonga becomes the team’s leading goal scorer in the tournament with two goals and the side’s top-scoring defender of all time with four goals overall. What’s more, after the tournament he becomes the only South African player to be named in the Team of the Tournament – albeit as a sub.

“It’s thanks to the support I get from my teammates,” he says humbly when we meet up with him at Melrose Place Lodge, north of Joburg.

The Orlando Pirates player is having a rare morning off from training to spend time with his fiancée Gwen, who hails from Witbank. “I hardly have any free time, but now that I have it I’m spending all of it with my fiancée and today I’m going to spoil her,” he says.

Gwen nods approvingly. “Whatever he decides to do for me today is up to him.
