HE HAS 14 years in the presenting field, she has – well, none, although she does have plenty of experience in the entertainment industry and is confident, capable and camera-savvy.

The first time they met was on set when they discussed taking over the reins of one of the hottest celeb gossip shows on the box. And Phat Joe and Brenda Ngxoli couldn’t wait to get stuck in and stamp their own personalities on it . . .

But there have been some teething problems. Change is something viewers have to get used to – and after seeing the original presenters of The Real Goboza (RGB), witty Trevor Noah and stylish Dineo Ranaka, being replaced by the funky, no-holds-barred duo of Kuli Roberts and Siyabonga Ngwekazi, they need time to adapt again.

There has been negative feedback on Twitter and Facebook about Joe and Brenda in particular as well as the content of the SABC1 show but it’s early days yet – the pair only took over this month and they’re determined to make a success of it.

And on the face of it, a success is exactly what it should be. After all, how can you go wrong when you team one of the most controversial names in broadcasting with one of Mzansi’s best-loved actresses?

Clearly that was the thinking of the bosses of RGB when they approached the pair. There were no auditions, no instructions of how the producers wanted the show to go – Joe and Brenda just had to get on with it.

Joe knew very little about Brenda before they met but was given a “brief description” about her on the day they had their first meeting. Brenda, on the other hand, knew all about her soon-to-be colleague. “I’ve always been a fan of his since the days he had his own TV show,” she says.

Joe confesses he had never even watched an episode of The Real Goboza before he was approached to co-present. “I’m not an avid TV viewer even though I’m in the industry,” he says. “I prefer to read stuff than watch TV.”
