Mining company Gold One has fired more than 1400 workers after a week-long illegal strike at its Ezulwini mine, on the West Rand.

"The company dismissed approximately 1435 of the total 1900 employees at its Ezulwini Operation," it said in a statement on Tuesday

Gold One confirmed that the workers were the same 1435 who were notified of their suspension from the mine on Wednesday.

The company initially intended holding disciplinary hearings on Friday over participation in the unprotected strike, but postponed these to Monday.

"Management considered the representations made against dismissal and concluded that, in almost all cases, there were insufficient mitigating factors against the sanction of dismissal," it said.

The workers had the right to appeal the dismissals at hearings scheduled to take place from Tuesday to Thursday.

Police were maintaining a "strong presence" at the mine to ensure there was no violence.
