The Western Cape can expect even more wet and cold conditions, the SA Weather Service said on Wednesday.

"Heavy rains are expected in places over the Cape metropole, Overberg, south-western parts of the Cape Winelands, and southern parts of the west coast districts on Thursday," forecaster Madinetja Thema said.

"Localised urban flooding is expected in the same places."

Thema said gale force winds were expected between Cape Point and Cape Agulhas.

The Cape Town disaster management centre said it would monitor the situation, but there was no real danger.

"There is no danger or threat; it is just that the water table is saturated, that is the unfortunate part," spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.

In Mpumalanga, residents were warned of possible veld fires due to high temperatures and strong winds. These conditions were expected in the Highveld areas of the province from Wednesday to Sunday, the co-operative governance department said.

"The department would like to request residents to make sure that they do not start fires in the open veld, all fires are controlled, and that they make sure that the fires are completely put out before leaving that area," spokesman Simphiwe Kunene said.

"Parents should take care that children do no start fires. All motorists are warned to slow down when driving in areas where there is smoke."
