A woman who pretended to be a police officer to solicit money from foreigners was arrested in Johannesburg on Wednesday, police said.

Captain Katlego Mogale said the 42-year-old woman and an accomplice showed foreigners a police appointment certificate and demanded to see their passports.

When they did not produce them, she demanded money from them.

Mogale said she would appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on charges of corruption and impersonating a police officer.

Mogale said it was not yet clear how the woman got the certificate.
