John "Shoes" Moshoeu has passed away at 49 after a battle with cancer

Former Bafana Bafana captain John "Shoes" Moshoeu has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

The former Kaizer Chiefs mid-fielder's death was confirmed by his agent Glyn Binkin on Twitter.

Binkin tweeted that Moshoeu passed away at 15:00 on Tuesday afternoon and has asked that the family's privacy be respected at this point of mourning.

The 49-year-old played for Bafana Bafana 73 times and scored eight times since he began playing for the national squad in 1993 until 2004. No formal statement has been released by the South African Football Association (SAFA) or by Moshoeu's former club, Kaizer Chiefs. Here are Binkin's tweets below:
