Hard on the heels of the Shout for a Safer South Africa campaign he established with Danny K, popular kwaito emcee and actor Kabelo Mabalane is now an ambassador for voluntary medical male circumcision in South Africa

According to a press release, the Reverse Yomhlaba singer encourages men to be circumcised by telling his own story. Kabelo was circumcised after school when, in a discussion with a group of friends, he realised that he was the only one who hadn’t had an “upgrade”.

“I went to a hospital for an upgrade and I was pleasantly surprised that there was minimal pain,” he recalls. “Now I am a vocal advocate for circumcision as part of a healthier lifestyle for men and women alike, aware that we are still not beating the war on HIV infections.”

It’s been reported that circumcision reduces the chance of contracting HIV/Aids by 60%, and it also reduces the risk of sexually transmitted infections. Women benefit too because circumcision reduces their risk of cervical cancer, the most prevalent cancer for women in South Africa.
