A Kagiso man has been arrested for assaulting police officers who were arresting his wife, police said on Friday.

"When the police tried to arrest him he resisted, but was eventually overpowered and arrested," said Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.

He said the 53-year-old man attacked them while they were arresting his 34-year-old wife on Thursday, on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He would face charges of assaulting a police officer, defeating the ends of justice, resisting arrest and obstructing a police officer from performing his duties.

The couple was being held at the Kagiso police station and would appear in the Kagiso Magistrate's Court on Monday, he said.
