The mother of two toddlers found dead in Katlehong will appear in the Heidelberg Magistrate's Court today.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said on Thursday that the 26-year-old woman would face two charges of murder.

On Wednesday, Katlehong residents found the toddlers, aged one and three, dead in a field near Zonkizizwe, Katlehong.

Their mother, who was found with them, was admitted to hospital in a critical condition and discharged and placed under arrest on Thursday.

The woman initially told police that she and her husband had an argument after she found him in bed with another woman.

She claimed he had left her and the children in the veld on Tuesday, while on their way from Witbank to Johannesburg, and that he had left them with a cool drink.

The woman claimed that she awoke the next morning, after she and the children drank it, to find the toddlers dead.

Dlamini said the woman was arrested after police found discrepancies in her story.

"The father of the two little children was traced and submitted a statement to the police. It is suspected that the girls died of poisoning."
