During our photoshoot with her and her children, daughter Larona (8) son Lesika (7) we ask about her children’s unique names.

“Larona’s full name is Larona Lehakwe which means ‘Our Jewel’,” she explains. Larona’s second name is derived from the Sesotho word Lehakwe, a Jewel.

“Jewel is a Christopher family name. She is named after both my husband’s grandmother and sister.”

Kgomotso further reveals that she together with her husband, Calvin actually spent sleepless nights trying to figure out names. They wanted their children’s names to be a reflection of their mixed heritage as Batswana/Basotho and African-Americans.

She further adds that: “Lesika’s full name is Lesika Leatile meaning ‘Our family has grown and been strengthened’. His second name is Langston. Also a Christopher family name, my husband’s paternal uncle and of course a uniquely African-American name paying tribute to the iconic American poet and philosopher Langston Hughes,” she further explains.
