The sentences will run concurrently.

Mbatha and Yotwana and about four others are believed to have entered KZN businessman Zwelakhe Kheswa’s (45) Taylor’s Halt residence in September through an open door and attacked him and his family. Kheswa was sleeping when the attackers entered the house.

It’s alleged he managed to grab one of the accused and an altercation between them ensued, which led to the accused firing multiple gunshots at the deceased. Kheswa died in the arms of his 16-year-old daughter. His wife and other daughter were pistol-whipped in the botched robbery where only R360 and two sets of car keys were taken.

In a joint operation by SAPS and a security company, Mbatha and Yotwana were arrested in November.

They pleaded guilty to the charges and offered to assist the State by testifying against the man that they allege contracted them for the robbery and the other perpetrators. The man, known as Njabulo, is in police custody.

KZN Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the conviction and sentence.

“It’s comforting to know that these two thugs will be behind bars where they can cause no more harm to innocent citizens in this province,” she said.
