The officers spotted a grey VW Polo driving at high speed in Sheridan Road and when the occupants of the vehicle saw the police following them, they opened fire. The officers returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect.

The second suspect was arrested and the third managed to flee the scene on foot after their vehicle crashed.

The vehicle traced positive as a hijacked vehicle in the Chatsworth area. It’s believed that both men might be linked to other hijackings in the area.

A firearm was also recovered from the scene and will be taken for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province.

The arrested suspect will be charged for being in possession of property suspected to be stolen, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted murder.

He will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court soon.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni says police will be on high alert during the festive season and officers will be deployed at crime hotspots to curb hijackings and robberies.

“Criminals need to be aware that our police officers mean business and we will never be intimidated by their attacks,” she said.
