HE’S owed a month’s leave and up to 110 days in overtime, his cellphone is never left on silent – not even while he’s in front of his favourite soapie – and his wife and children have grown accustomed to spending quality and not quantity time with him.

This is what your life is like when you dedicate it to ridding your town of bad guys – or, as this tough supercop puts it, “squeezing criminals out, one by one”.

And Sergeant Lindani Mhlongo has the track record to prove he means business. Regarded as the best policeman at the cluster crime-prevention unit in Pinetown, just outside durban, the burly 40-year-old dad of nine makes an average of between 15 and 20 arrests each month and has nabbed a grand total of more than 5 000 suspects in his two decades on the force.
