Lebo M's new life

OUT at Hartbeespoort Dam, Lion King producer and composer LeboM can laze around listening to the sound of hadedas, watch a herd of springbok amble past or play around with his children. We’re meeting at his Tuscan inspired house, which has beautiful views over the neighbouring estates and for the first time he talks openly about his alcoholic

past and how he’s come out stronger than ever.

Anyone would think that this tranquil setting on the edge of the Magaliesberg, one hour’s drive from Joburg, would be the perfect place to write another award winning film score. Not so, says Lebo “Lebo M” Morake (47), with a knowing smile: “I haven’t written a song since I moved here. And that’s the idea; I’ve had a hectic, rough five years.

Now I need to raise a family.”

Married to Angela (28) since 2008, he now has a nine-month-old baby with her, and she has two children from a previous relationship. “I moved out here to make time for my family. At one point I was stuck in traffic on William Nicol Drive for more than an hour,” says the man who lived in Dainfern (close to Fourways in Jozi) for nine years until his change of heart. “I decided right there and  then that I had to get out.
