I was not even aware about the circumstances around Joyous’ s nomination- Lebo

Gospel songbird Lebo Sekgobela is tipped for glory at this weekend’s Metro FM Music Awards (MMA). The Lion of Judah singer is nominated in three categories, including Best Female, Best Urban Gospel Album, and Song of the Year. Quite a feat for the Vaal-based singer! Lebo will slug it out with crowd pleasers such as Kelly Khumalo for the Best Female accolade and, in what has to bean historic occasion, she’ll face up to House and Hip Hop influentials including King Monada for Song of the Year accolade.

Lebo has been a good sport about the news of Joyous Celebration pulling out of the competition. The popular gospel outfit was announced as one of the nominees for the Best Urban Gospel Album accolade in January, before  their record company announced last week that they entered the group by mistake.

“I was not even aware about the circumstances around Joyous’ s nomination,” she said. “If they are nominated it means the fans are excited and they would want to vote for them. But seeing as it’s the decision they’ve made (not to participate in award ceremonies), perhaps they don’t want to be seen to be employing double standards by entering for MMAs. I think it’s their choice and we need to respect the choice they made.”

Has she prepared an acceptance speech? I ask. “No, I haven’t prepared. But tell you what . . . If I win, the award will have to go on tour with me for everyone to experience it somehow. It’s for the fans.”
