Load shedding (7/7)

Love can stage an unplanned blackout – just like Eskom.

Several hours later she was back in the comfort of her own flat, in command of herself once more, cradling a cup of coffee in her hands. A towelling gown nuzzled her body as she enjoyed the view of the busy city centre from her balcony. It had been a long day and Lerato was tired; her feet ached. She moved indoors and lay down on the couch.

As she was picking up the remote to turn on the TV, she heard a knock on the door. Wondering who it could be at such a time, she made her way to the door. “Who is it?” Lerato called out, but no one replied. She looked through the peephole and saw a tuft of recognisable uncombed hair.

Unlocking the door, she opened it to stare at him. He was wearing the jacket he’d worn on their very first date. The memories of 24 months started flooding in and Lerato tried to control herself, squeezing her cup of hot coffee hard to hold back the emotions.

He stared at her in silence. She said, “George, what do you want?” “Lerato, I’ve come to answer your question.”

The end.
