His dad, Ringo, is one of South Africa’s most popular stars and Phila Madlingozi is following in his footsteps

THE relationship is obvious  when it comes to singer Ringo Madlingozi and his son Phila – these two are the spitting image of one another and share the same good looks and charming smile.

Phila, who is the latest “It boy”, oozes confidence just like his famous dad.

And the cliché about the apple not falling far from the tree is certainly true for this father-and-son pair, as Phila is also an aspiring showbiz star.

We meet them at the Zoo Lake Bowling Club in Joburg. Phila tells us he’s rushing off to attend the MetroFM awards in Durban so he has only an hour to spend with us. Judging by his obvious excitement he can’t wait to head down to the coast

to be part of the buzz of the event.

“This is my launch event and I can’t afford to miss it,” the rising star says anxiously as his dad laughs and shakes his head. It’s evident the media- shy Ringo is not completely comfortable with his son being in the spotlight, perhaps because he knows the pressures of showbiz firsthand.

Our suspicions are spot on as Ringo (49) admits the industry is not always good to young people. But, because he trusts Phila, he has accepted his career choice. “I worry about him but what can I say? As long as he’s happy, I’m happy,” Ringo says.
