As South Africans from all walks of life trickled to polling stations for the fifth democratic elections, at the Seshego township outside Polokwane in Limpopo, the focus was on the Economic Freedom Fighters’ self-styled commander-in-chief, Julius Malema.

The former ANC Youth League leader attracted unequalled media attention as he sauntered onto the voting station at his former primary school, Mponegele at Zone 1 Masakaneng.

In this neck of the hood, the political terrain is fiercely contested by the EFF and the ANC and Malema’s name is commonly mentioned with mixed emotions.

Political battles here at Milo Malatji’s Ward 13 are often settled with fisticuffs and this Election Day was no exception as sworn rivals threatened to throw jabs at each other.

Boy Mamabolo, Malema’s erstwhile political ally-turned arch-rival and Malema’s trusted lieutenant, Joseph “Stalin” Buthane almost came to blows as the latter accused the ANC of illegitimately campaigning by distributing t-shirts a stone’s throw from the polling station.

Fearing a recurrence of previous brawls, a massive police contingent was deployed to the biggest township in Limpopo, with a police helicopter hovering above the blue sky.

Malema, who made a grand entrance, accompanied by his grandmother, Sarah, was quick to endorse the elections as smoothly conducted.

“I am quite happy with the manner in which these elections were run. If what I am seeing here is what is happening all over the country, then we must praise the ICE for a job well done” said Malelma.

Brimming with confidence, Malema, who he said the EFF will fare pretty well, reiterated that his party is a new chapter to be read in South African politics.

“We have ran an exciting election campaign with the sole intention to win these polls because we want to change the nature of SA politics” Malema told scores of reporters.
