A man died in a shack fire in Zamimpilo informal settlement, Riverlea, Johannesburg, on Thursday, said the city's emergency services.

"The man, 50, was found while we were going through the remains of the fire," said spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.

He said the fire broke out around 2am and destroyed about 80 shacks. The cause was not known, but might have been gas appliances.

Ten people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, Mulaudzi said.

He said the emergency service would intensify its safety campaigns as these had led to a reduction in the number of fires in vulnerable areas in the past.
