OR Tambo International airport was abuzz with drug busts on Tuesday

A 52-year-old man appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Tuesday after R1m worth of tik was found wrapped around his body at OR Tambo International Airport.

News 24 reports that Emmanuel Akunehuezi Obiwuru, who was travelling on a Nigerian issued passport, was arrested at the airport at the weekend, police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.

Obiwuru was one of three people arrested by the SA Police Service's transitional investigation team at OR Tambo International.

"At the time of his arrest, he had just disembarked from a flight that was coming from Lagos, Nigeria," Naidoo said.

"The drugs were found wrapped around his body."

Obiwuru's case was postponed. He would remain in custody in the interim.

And in another News24 report, two men were arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday for allegedly acting as drug mules.

The men, aged 35 and 47, were travelling on Angolan and DRC issued passports and were in transit from Sao Paolo, Brazil, spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo said.

"The two had apparently swallowed their drugs,” said Naidoo.

"The value cannot be established as yet because some of the drugs are still lodged in their stomachs.”

The men are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
