Mandela remembered

Nostalgic memories brought an intimate touch to the state funeral of former president Nelson Mandela in Qunu on Sunday.

African National Congress deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa expressed gratitude to Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, as he recounted details of Mandela and other ANC activists' visits to his country during the anti-apartheid struggle.

The audience giggled when Malawian President Joyce Banda recounted how, when she visited Mandela at his Houghton home, she nearly ran out when confronted with the global statesman waiting for her.

"My first reaction was to run out," she said.

Banda said there was a famous picture of Mandela's widow Graca Machel pulling her back towards Mandela.

Mandela's granddaughter Nandi Mandela reminisced about her strict, but mischievous grandfather.

"At dinner, he always told us stories and poked fun at himself as he recounted stories of his childhood."
