Former president Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla Mandela was found guilty of assault by the Mthatha Regional Court on Tuesday, the NPA said.

"I can confirm that he has been found guilty on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, but he was acquitted on the charge of pointing a firearm," National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesman Luxolo Tyali said in a statement.

"We accept the judgment and we are happy that he has been found guilty on the charge of assault."

Sentencing arguments would be heard on June 2 and 3.

Mandela assaulted teacher Mlamli Ngudle in Mthatha in October 2013 after Ngudle crashed his car into a car driven by one of Mandela's guests.
