Mandoza’s 12-year-old hit song Nkalakatha is making a comeback, this time with new sounds and Afrikaans lyrics, a Youtube video announced.

In the 4-minute video, it is said that Mandoza will again team up with music composer Gabi Le Roux to give the song “a 2012 feel and dressing” but leaving its roaring bassline unchanged.

Nkalakatha features as a “National Anthem” in a series of the latest Nando’s ad campaign called 25 Reasons Why We Love South Africa.

When asked why the song was remade Mandoza replied: “Before [the song] used to be owned by a company called EMI, but now we want to take ownership of the song and do anything that we like because the song still exists after 12 years.”

The song was also given “a little sprinkle of Afrikaans for the rugby lovers”, Le Roux said.

Nkalakatha was released to critical acclaim in 2000 and it catapulted Mandoza’s brand to greater heights. Whether this remake will do wonders for Mandoza’s waning career remains to be seen.
