Maskandi stars struggling for fame

They were popular a decade ago, but now Shwi noMtekhala are fighting to make a comeback and hope their new album will put them back in the spotlight

They were once the most famous maskandi outfit in the country and their debut album, Wangisiza Baba shot them to fame.

As the height of their fame 10 years ago, Shwi noMthekhala won three SAMAs and two South African Traditional Music Awards.

They were on fire - then things started going downhill for the duo after they had an altercation with their previous record label, Bula Music.

We meet up with the other half of the duo at Buyafuthi Hostel in Katlehong where his room is divided into three sections, and there's still an old events poster of the duo on a wall.
