The Gauteng Education Department has sent its sincere apologies to matric exam markers, following delays in payment.

In a statement, Oupa Bodibe the Department’s spokesperson, says the delays are a result of a financial shortfall.

“A partial payment which included a 32% tax was affected based on the available budget,” he says.

Bodibe says they are seeking out additional funds to ensure the balance of R500 million will be paid before the end of March 2017.

The Department is looking for assistance from Treasury and has already paid R81 million.

Calls to speak to Bodibe to find out why the payment of exam markers was not budgeted for before the exams went unanswered.
