Matric pass rate 78.2 percent

The matric class of 2013 achieved a pass rate of 78.2 percent, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced.

The results bettered the 2012 pass rate of 73.9 percent and are the best matric results since 1994.

Matriculants in the Free State scored the highest pass rate with 87.4 percent with the North West close behind with a 87.2 percent pass rate.

The rest of provincial pass rates are as follows: Gauteng 87%, Western Cape 85.1%, KwaZulu-Natal 77.4%, Mpumalanga 77.6%, Northern Cape 74.5%, Limpopo 71.8% and Eastern Cape 64.9%.

The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) last week announced a matric pass rate increased of 98.6 percent for 2013.

Individual results will be released to students on Tuesday with matriculants able to obtain their results from  their schools, exam centres or in special newspaper editions.
