Meet racing driver Gugu Zulu

HE’S MZANSI’S most celebrated black racing driver – a Soweto-born master behind the wheel who has excelled in a sport that has catapulted him to stardom. Gugulethu Zulu (32), affectionately known as The Fastest Brother in Africa, has also shone off the track with a three-year stint as presenter of popular SABC motoring show Car Torque, and in 2008 showed off his dance moves as a celebrity contestant in the reality show Strictly Come Dancing. Now he’s taking on an exciting new venture – he’ll be the opening act when the hugely popular Top Gear Festival makes its much-anticipated debut on South African shores this week.

Let's get straight to it then - WHat's the fatest you've ever clocked on a racetrack?Between 290 and 300 km/h.

That's about as fast as your rise to fame. Tell us about some of the highlights on the way.

I did the car stunts in the movie Lord of War about the illegal arms trade starring Nicholas Cage. I also had the honour of racing against US racing driver Marco Andretti (son of racing legend Mario Andretti) in 2004 and I’ve raced in Europe as well.
