Meet the real Katlego Mphela

He is fashionably unshaven, so clearly the time spent in France wasn’t in vain.

Not only did 28-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela enhance his soccer skills during his four years in the land of fine dining, he also came back with an impeccable sense of fashion.

“I love looking great,” he says as he admires himself in a mirror. “Style is a big part of me.”

Then the North West province-born soccer ace becomes stony-faced as he reflects on a time when his image was dragged through the dirt after newspapers called him a philanderer.

“I’m nothing like that – I am not a womaniser,” he says of the spate of bad publicity during the past few years.

“It got to the point where I felt as if someone had a score to settle because it was almost like a personal vendetta against me.

“I used to be shocked when I woke up to yet another story involving me when I was not even near the place where the incident was supposed to have happened.”

He says his mother and two younger brothers who love and admire him were hurt and disappointed when they read these malicious rumours.
